PREFACE TO THE 96th EDITION
'FEW indeed have been the occasions in the past when an edition of this work has recorded changes so numerous and important as the present one. The abdication of King Edward VIII occurred too late in the year 1936 to be taken cognisance of in our last issue; this year, the far reaching changes which necessarily ensued from that event are fully noted in the text, and it would appear to be superflous to comment at length here, on a subject which has already been the theme of countless articles and discussions. The circumstances of King Edward's renunciation of the throne were quite unparalleled in the history of our own, or indeed of any country, and it was ntural that the feelings of his subjects should be profoundly moved, and the imagination of the world aroused; but, happily, the events of last December have neither impaired the fabric of the monarchy, nor weakened the loyalty of millions whose dominion it embraces.'
