LEEDS the principal seat of the English woollen manufacture and trade, and the centre of mining, engineering and iron works—is a city, municipal, parliamentary and county borough, a township and parish, and the head of a union, chiefly in the wapentake of Skyrack (lower division), but partly also in the wapentake of Morley, in the Pudsey division of the West Biding of Yorkshire, liberty of the honor of Pontefract, and in the rural deanery of Leeds, archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon and province of York; it is the assize town for the West Biding division of the North-Eastern Judicial Circuit, the seat of district county and bankruptcy courts and of quarter sessions, and stands third (or before Birmingham and Newcastle, and after London and South Lancashire) in the list of the five great district-centres of population in England.
