'IN the year 1882, the late Mr. J. S, Crapper, then an Alderman of the Ancient Corporation of Hanley, compiled from the records an account which he published, and which now forms the basis of this work. His representatives have given full permission to use this material in any way I may deem best calculated to interest the members. So I decided to reproduce a large portion of the original, making such alterations as are necessitated by the progress of events, and adding some account of the records of the last eighteen years.'
