There were two issues of Harts Army Lists, a quarterly issue from 1839 which continued until the outbreak of war in 1914 and an annual list from 1840 to 1915. Both contain the usual lists of General and Field Officers, regimental lists, Staff and Garrison Establishments, and include the dates of the various promotions of officers. They also include the war service of each officer, which was not available in official lists until 1881.
Full regimental lists of the Militia were added in 1854 on embodiment, the Indian Army in 1862, Yeomanry in 1881, and the Special Reserve and Territorial Force in 1909. The quarterly lists dealt only with officers on the Active List, whereas the annual included all officers, whether on the Active, Half-Pay or Retired Lists.
