A General History and Description of the County, with the whole of the Lake District; and of the Diocese of Carlisle, from the foundation of the See to the present period; followed by a separate History and Directory of the City of Carlisle, and of every Borough, Town, Parish, Chapelry, Township, Village, Hamlet, Barony, Liberty, and Honour ; arranged under the heads of the Six Wards into which Cumberland is now divided-thus affording, with the aid of a copious Index of Places, Persons, and Subjects, all the advantages of an Alphabetical Gazetteer ; and it is hoped that this arrangement, in accordance with the recent Division of the County, will increase the utility of the work, and enhance its value.
