Tixall Gatehouse, Staffordshire.
Engraved by Sands for a drawing by W. Carter. Taken from Joseph Nightingale, The
Beauties of England and Wales 1813.
The Hall, of which this was the Gatehouse was built 1575 and demolished after
burning down c.1780. The Gatehouse remains, was just a roofless shell, but was
bought and restored by the Landmark Trust 1976. You can now rent it as a
splendid holiday cottage ! The Gatehouse is renaissance in its detail.
